Information Literacy Program Goals and Objectives
George T. Potter Library

 

  • To make the transition from the current traditional, teach-on-demand model to the information literacy program model
      • Refine a tiered instructional program that develops information literacy skills incrementally from general education courses to graduation
      • Emphasize discipline-based needs when applicable
      • Create a Library Liaison program that supports the development of information literacy pedagogy for classroom faculty
      • Create (or make available) a web-based information literacy tutorial
      • Create a basic research guide, available both online and in hard copy
      • Create subject guides (“pathfinders”)
      • Develop/adapt an assessment process for both programmatic and class level review
      • Provide opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to learn about specific databases
  • To create instructional programs for specific General Education courses
      • Ensure that every College English section includes a minimum of one session taught by library faculty
      • Create content, materials, and instructional methods
      • En sure even distribution of teaching responsibilities for these classes among the instruction librarians
  • To create a separate instructional program for First Year Seminar/Experience
      • Administer assessment instrument to every incoming student
      • Standardize the introduction of elements of Information Literacy
  • To assess the effectiveness of the Information Literacy Program at the end of the sophomore year (or to administer assessment instrument to incoming transfer students)
  • To assess the effectiveness of the Information Literacy Program at the end of the senior year
      • Graduation requirement?
  • Professional development
      • Encourage the professional development of librarians and staff through training in information literacy concepts, standards, and teaching methods
      • Encourage faculty to work with instruction librarians to design course-related assignments that include information literacy objectives.
      • Encourage teaching faculty to utilize new/improved databases
