Using IndexesWhy use an Index? Indexes help us to find articles in journals, magazines and newspapers. What is an Index? An index is a collection of citations to articles listed alphabetically by subject. Some indexes include abstracts or summaries with the citation. An electronic/online index is called a database. How do I use an Index? You can check the front pages for "how to use" instructions. Locate a citation under your subject and copy it. Electronic indexes provide instructions on the screen. READ CAREFULLY! What is the citation? A citation has the title, author(s), name of journal, magazine or newspaper where the article was printed, volume number, page number and date of publication. How do I know which index to use? A general index, such as Expanded Academic ASAP, lists citations to articles about many subjects. Some indexes focus on one subject or discipline, such as Art Index or Social Sciences Abstracts. What is the difference between a journal and a magazine? A journal publishes scholarly, usually lengthy articles on very specific topics. Abstracts or summaries are often included. The authors are specialists in their field of study. Articles describe original research and the information is verifiable. Bibliographies are included. Magazines are written for a general audience and contain articles on popular topics. They are mostly written by staff writers, not always identified. The information is not always verifiable. How do I get an article from a journal, magazine or newspaper? Paper copies of periodicals are on the second floor of the library. Full text, electronic articles are found within the specific databases
