Collection Development Policy

In keeping with the Library's mission, the Collection Management Librarian, along with other library faculty, is responsible for selecting materials in direct support of the college curriculum and other titles appropriate to a

small academic library.

Teaching faculty* are encouraged to make recommendations that support student research in their areas of expertise, although the library reserves the right to set limits on purchases for a single or specialized course. The core collections, both reference and circulating, are intended to serve the broadest possible audience in each discipline and for the long term. The library does not support the purchase of titles intended for the personal use of members of the college community.

Textbooks, review copies, instructor's manuals, self-help books, travel books, music scores, or outdated formats are outside the library's collection scope. (An exception is made for textbooks that are used for research in specific disciplines.) In addition, the library does not collect multiple copies, or works in multiple formats, with the exception of literature to film.

Replacement and/or updating of missing or lost books is performed on a regular basis by the collection management librarian through student/faculty requests and periodic review of items listed as lost in the catalog. Priority is always given to items needed for reserve. Missing/lost videos or DVDs that are relevant to the curriculum may be replaced after one year has passed to avoid duplication and unnecessary expense.

Gifts of books in good physical condition are accepted when the books conform to the selection criteria and after evaluation by the Collection Management Librarian. Acknowledgements in writing are made upon request, but the library cannot supply appraisals for tax purposes.

Responsibility for developing and maintaining the integrity of the collection lies with the Collection Management Librarian, and, ultimately, the College Librarian/Dean.

*Adjunct requests are accepted when made through the convener.
